NEW: Gdańsk – Karlshamn ferry line launches. A new boost for Baltic transport

Posted by Grzegorz

Polish Baltic Shipping Co. and the Port of Karlshamn have officially signed an agreement that opens an entirely new chapter in maritime connections between Poland and Sweden. In the second quarter of 2026, the first ferries under the new POLSCA group brand will connect the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal with Karlshamn in Sweden.

The decision to launch the line is a response to growing cargo market demand and a strategic step in consolidating Polish maritime potential. The agreement, concluded for a minimum of three years, is the result of close cooperation between shipowners and ports, aimed at restoring Polish carriers to a dominant position in the southern Baltic.

Key parameters of the new line:

  • Crossing time: approx. 13 hours (ideal for drivers’ rest breaks).
  • Frequency: 6 sailings per week in each direction.
  • Schedule: Evening departures from ports, morning arrivals at destination.
  • Cargo capacity: Each of the two ferries will accommodate approx. 90 truck combinations (cargo lane approx. 2 km).

Cargo as the priority

The new connection has been designed with professional road transport in mind. The route will be served by two vessels:

  1. Ferry dedicated to cargo – optimized for efficient loading and transport of trucks and trailers.
  2. Ro-pax ferry – combining large cargo capacity with a comfortable passenger area (cabins, catering), providing an excellent alternative for drivers and tourists.

POLSCA – a new force on the Baltic

The Gdańsk – Karlshamn line is one of the first major projects under the new company POLSCA, which consolidates the operations of Polferries (PŻB) and Unity Line.

Market analyses confirmed that a second connection from the Tri-City to central Sweden is essential. The Polsca project gives us new opportunities and increases our competitiveness – emphasizes Piotr Redmerski, President of Polish Baltic Shipping.

Launching this route primarily means greater flexibility and a real alternative to the Gdynia – Karlskrona line. The strategic location of the Port of Gdańsk as a logistics hub and the modern infrastructure of the Westerplatte Terminal guarantee efficient logistics handling and easy access for heavy goods vehicles.

Planned start of sailings: Q2 2026 (ambitious plans assume operational readiness before this year’s May holidays).
